Shaping Lessons are available (please use the contact form to email for full details).
Lessons are by the hour, and the hourly rate depends on what the lesson content is. A 1st lesson, for example, would be at a higher cost per hour than 2nd lesson, as for a second lesson I do less of the "heavy lifting." A first board can take anywhere from 4 to 14 hours, depending on the board design and other factors such as how closely matched the design's rocker/thickness is to the blank's rocker/thickness, past experience surfing and doing ding repair, smooth cooperation, etc.. A reasonable expectation for a first lesson, with some experience doing doing repair on your own boards, is probably about 5-7 hours, with good teamwork. All that is really needed, with good notes and focus, is one lesson. What you will learn: how to create a new design and draw it out (measuring, blending, templating, blending templates), how to choose a blank for that design, basic design concepts and rationale, how to set-up a bay and the basic tools needed, and how to use them, how to shape and finish a board, fin layout and the basics of fin layouts. The first lesson is mostly instructional, like a lecture, with hands-on use of all the tools (though to save you cost I will do most of the "heavy lifting"). A second lesson is more a mix of practice and supervision, where you do more of the work, and my role shifts more to oversight and coaching. You will need: a blank (I can tell you where to get it, and what to get, based on your board choice), work clothes, respirator. Optional: notebook. Good idea: a snack or packed lunch. We can also break for lunch, "off the clock." You don't need: any shaping tools or supplies other than the blank. You are welcome to bring your own tools if you have any and prefer to use them. Glassing lessons are possible, but less practical (glassing involves a lot of wait time, and is a nasty, dirty business, costing about $170 in materials per 6' board, so at around $300, on average, pro glassing is a bargain).
