Batfish surfboards are all templated, cut and shaped by hand in Santa Cruz, CA.

I began making boards for myself, and for friends, purely for pleasure, not for income, and got into making boards just because I'm heavy for my height (5' 7", 215 lbs) and wanted to shrink my board lengths while increasing floatation.  Off-the-rack boards generally paddle unduly poorly for me, and by making my own boards I'm able to get a happier paddle/performance ratio.

Most of the boards I've made that are in circulation were made for friends, friends of friends, or myself. To watch friends ride boards I've made for them is a pleasure that never gets old.

The original purpose of these pages was to store information about boards I've made for people who may encounter a board later -- I've added the ordering information, but archiving the boards and keeping records of good fin combinations & notes is still this site's main function.  There are some old notes on boards and fins on this website (in the Archive area) but after 2018 new boards have been archived on Instagram.  If you have a board I made, the date I signed it will be written along the stringer, and there will usually be a post in Instagram about it with fin notes.
